Sending email says it was "rejected by the server"

If you try to send an email from your iPhone or iPad and get an error message that says "A copy has been placed in your outbox. The recipient was rejected by the server" chances are you need to check your outgoing mail server settings. Here's how:

  1. Go to Settings -> Accounts and Settings
  2. Tap on your email account
  3. Tap on "Account", then navigate to "Outgoing Mail Server" and tap on SMTP.
  4. Tap on your primary server
  5. Even though it says "Optional", fill in both the username and password under Outgoing Mail Server.
  6. Change the Server Port to 465 and ensure that "Use SSL" is on.
  7. Tap "Done" in the top right to save the changes.

You should now be able to send emails without receiving the above error.
