Taking action to become carbon positive with Ecologi

We decided at the end of 2020 to increase our efforts to reduce our impact on the environment, and we chose to support Ecologi.

Being ‘green’ isn’t particularly new for us as our website hosting services operate on 100% renewable energy.

However, we decided that we needed to do more to help prevent further global warming.

Global warming is a fact, and has potential to be a global catastrophe and if we all do our part and work together this can be entirely avoidable.

In December we signed up with Ecologi, founded by three friends and based in Bristol, UK. Their mission is to help reduce carbon emissions and avert the catastrophe that could await us if the problems of global warming and poverty are ignored.

With their help, we’re working to be a climate-positive workforce by reducing our carbon footprint, funding Gold Standard sustainability projects and helping to plant trees all over the world as well as the UK.

Both Callum and I have enrolled in a monthly climate positive subscription where each month 24 new trees are planted which supports the offsetting of 2 tonnes of CO2.

In 2021 we plan to introduce further benefits to our customers and clients. This will include additional trees planted for every new order and every year you renew with us we will celebrate by planting a number of trees based on the number of years you have been with us at Weave Studios.

Take a look at our Ecologi profile to see our stats and forest. If you’d like to join in then we’d encourage you to register your own business or community. Failing that if you’d like to donate to our efforts you can add to our grove (if you do – thank you so much).

Our most powerful weapon: trees

Trees are the ultimate carbon capture and storage machines. Like great carbon sinks, woods and forests absorb atmospheric carbon and lock it up for centuries. [1]

And trees do more than just capture carbon. They also fight the cruel effects of a changing climate helping to prevent flooding, reduce city temperature, reduce pollution and keep soil nutrient-rich.

Photosynthetic carbon capture by trees is likely to be among our most effective strategies to limit the rise of carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere – a key driver of global warming. The restoration of natural forests is also fundamental to the prevention of ecological collapse. Ecologi, in partnership with The Eden Reforestation Project, plants thousands of trees around the world every day. So far, they’ve funded the planting of 6.4 million trees and counting. [2]

How have we helped so far

The invaluable work undertaken by Ecologi helps empower Weave Studios to become a better company, and we are hugely proud to be supporting them.

As of 17th February, we have helped to plant 88 trees, this might not be much but it is the start of something great.

Since writing this post we earned the 3 months climate positive badge, and we are super proud of this first achievement.

Ecologi’s management and allocation of funds is so well organised they can provide a break down of exactly which projects we’re supporting and show us how our funding directly impacts atmospheric CO2 levels.

We know so far that we’ve helped to plant 38 mangrove trees in Madagascar, 39 trees in Mozambique, 5 trees in Bosawas, Nicaragua, and 6 trees closer to home in Scotland.

It’s not only the planting of trees. Other projects include the preservation of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor in Guatemala, and providing clean energy through hydropower in Kanungu, Uganda.

We’re excited to see how we can continue to help through our partnership with Ecologi. It’s an ongoing effort that’s rewarding on many levels
